Kalli

DJ | Producer | Promoter

Kalli is a Brighton-based producer and DJ whose sound is completely in a category of its own - pretty much indescribable. A set from Kalli can include Xenophobia’s ‘Rush in the House’ to Thomas P. Heckmann’s ‘Crash & Turn’. His approach to production is just as far-flung with tracks infused with techno, trance, drum’n’bass, breakbeat, electro, everything. As well as releases his own label Permanent Repetitive Language, he has just released ‘Sphericurve Cilindr’ on Ceili Collective and has an upcoming EP on THEM.

A regular fixture at THEM events in Corsica Studios, Kalli also plays at his own GODDEZZ events co-run with Portara at Grow, Tottenham where the below image of the venue’s in-house cat was taken…

Where was this photo taken and why did you pick it?

Was taken at Grow Tottenham LDN for mine and me mate Oli's first GODDEZZ rave, the party and label we started in 2019. Chose this one cause I didn't get ANY photos of that night except for this with the on-site cat which was cute AF, but I also came to the realisation that I don't really get any photos while I'm out, or any photos of me...I probs should start doing so though! Am I boring? N E WAY it was the first party I organised ever and we were so chuffed that the people on the lineup were so bloody kind and warming. Coco Bryce, Happa, Angel D'Lite and Me and Oli. I reckon we all felt we were in the same boat musically even though we are all at diff levels in our careers. We went through many BPMs that night. Proper wet environment. Also buzzin’ that we are continuing good work with GODDEZZ, shout out to the worldwide music crew (everyone who's into music basically).

What are you listening to at the moment if you’re working from home or if you’re still working out in the world, do you have a soundtrack to accompany your journey?

Listening to a lot of Greek Laika music on this radio streaming site that my dad listens to called "Dalkas", while sometimes throwing a bit of Greek pop music on Spotify to try and understand WTF is going on over there. Just heard Four Tet's new album which has some nice trancey ambient sounds on it too! Been trying to work my way through the infamous Planet Mu back catalogue. I've also just found a load of records while doing my 4th spring clean this week, so just trying to figure out a way to play them with no turntables. I read you can get a sewing needle on a lemon and a potato with a magnet or somet to make it work? CBA tho. The records are mainly just copies of my own EPs of what I got sent from labels lol. Love this fella called Westerman, reminds me of Arthur Russell, so that kinda shite is bang on. Just trying out new things every day.

Not working ATM, I'm in the catering/hospitality industry which has taken a hit. Still cookin’ at home tho and watching Rick Stein travel-cooking vids ha.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or anxious, do you have a go-to track or style of music that significantly lifts your spirits?

Whack a bit of ambient on (cliché? nice one) - one could check out the label and mix-sharing blog 'A Strangely Isolated Place'. There was a guy on there once who did some proper tunes as Horizontal Excursions aka Roger Martinez…some real rehab stuff that. I've also had to put on Classic FM or Radio 3 for my lil son. That also sounds like what the Readers Digest would suggest to its audience in 1992 or something but no joke it works. That’s all for relaxing though. If I wanna be uplifted I'll put on some archived mixes from Bowlers in Manchester.

How do you intend on celebrating once we’re out the other side?

1. Use actual coins instead of my debit card
2. Shake the hand of the nearest pub landlord
3. Book a flight to Venezuela then cancel it quite quickly out of having the privilege to be able to do so (regardless of bank funds)
4. Not turn the heating on (it will probs be summer hopefully)
5. Get back to bloody work
5.1 Go beach n’ that

Any tips on how to look after your mind and body during this slightly stressful time?

If yer so bored, drink loads of water and compete with your own mind if you aren't doing it. I heard it can plump up ur skin and make you look less grey.

Stick your head out of your window for top top air.

Listen to an album/EP/track a day from yer past that you loved AND hated.

Listen to a genre of music you haven't heard/didn't think you liked. Do a task like tidying up or washing up while ur at it.

Experiment with the food in ur cupboards! Let your nose lead the way.

Get rid of shoite you don't need while you can (like that plant pot within a plant pot…why u keeping that still? That bedding that Trisha and Mark slept in? Remember what they did that night?...u know the rest.)

Joe Wicks is doing a workout for prisoners on youtube every morning. I heard kids are doing it too?

Have some time away from yer phone, if you have one!

Restart a home-based hobby you had to give up 5/10/15 years ago because you had to do LYF stuff.

Find a spot in your gaff that you never use and sit within that space, and stare at the room from this newfound point of view. Warning, you might look at ur house differently from then on, feng shui and all that.

Sort your finances out now if u can, hopefully everyone is managing ok! Seek out places that that can help. Someone somewhere is helping.
